Blindsided

Is there something we don’t know about the relationship between Steve Appleford and Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins (Quick Spins, June 1)?

What was the point of Appleford’s review of Third Eye Blind’s latest album, “Out of the Vein”? It was long on dismissive sarcasm about Jenkins and short on anything that might support his claim that the album consists of Jenkins’ “whining about all those Hollywood parties he’s forced to attend.”

I have this album and can find no evidence of this “whining.” What I do find is pop-rock that is melodic, lyrically adept beyond the pap that is common on Top 40 radio, and displaying a quality of production that shows respect to the fans who have purchased millions of Third Eye Blind albums.

I would think that Appleford as a music journalist would feel a responsibility to offer music fans a critique that transcends five sentences of ad hominem attacks and an insight into why he felt the music was subpar. As he mentions in his critique, “Stephan Jenkins took his time with this one.” I only wish Appleford had done the same with his review.
