Challenge Kids With Tongue-Twisting Words

“Spelling Bewilderment” (letter, June 4) argues against the iniquitousness of the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee that challenges children with obscure words. But isn’t challenging kids to spell obscure or tongue-twisting words a great way to augment their vocabularies while developing their orthographic skills? What’s wrong with killing two birds with one stone?

In any case, society could use more people with better spelling skills. It would be a great idea to hold spelling bees for adults too. Floccinaucinihilipilification. Manish Patwari
