Regulators said they will launch crash tests and other reviews to determine whether tougher safety standards are needed for sport utility vehicles, pickups and minivans.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration promised a series of steps to address long-standing questions about SUV rollover risks and potential safety hazards of larger passenger vehicles sharing the road with cars.

Jeffrey Runge, the agency’s administrator, has said the government would act if automakers failed to resolve the questions on their own.
