Angels’ Big Problem Isn’t on the Field

The biggest improvement Arte Moreno could make for the Angels would be to get rid of those bush announcers. Am I the only listener who gets tired of hearing “the Wonder Dog” tell us how he invented all the monikers for the players? Please, somebody tell baseball management that once having played the game does not an announcer make. Being a fan since the Albie Pearson and Bo Belinsky days, I have suffered through some terrible Angel broadcasting teams, but these guys are the worst. Oh, how I miss Dick Enberg and Don Drysdale.

I went to the Angel-Phillie game Monday night at Edison Field, and guess who I saw? Fifteen minutes before the first pitch, walking the concourse on the upper deck with two other men, was new Angel owner Arte Moreno. Of all the games I went to under Disney ownership over the years, I can assure you I never saw Michael Eisner out and about the stadium -- not even in the Diamond Club, let alone up in the cheap seats.

While the Angels certainly haven’t looked like a champion so far this season, I know they are in good hands as they move into the future under new ownership.

Why is there even a question about what will happen to Jeff DaVanon? Fans see Darin Erstad’s hard-nosed attitude and his superb defensive play, and fall in love with the guy. Truth is, both men can catch fly balls, but only DaVanon can hit.
