The height of Old World style

It’s not every day that a condominium comes on the market at nearly $16 million, but one has in the Wilshire high-rise where Rodney Dangerfield and a few other celebrities live.

The condo was created by combining two penthouses on the two highest floors of the 26-story tower. The 90-plus-unit building was constructed in the 1990s. The double-penthouse condo was completed about 18 months ago.

The condo was the brainchild of Don and Marlys Byerly. He was founder and chairman of Byerly’s, an upscale Minnesota supermarket chain known for its in-store restaurants and carpeted, chandelier-lighted aisles. The couple moved to Newport Beach in the 1990s, where they spent six years redoing a house that sold in 2000 for nearly $15 million.

After they bought the penthouses, they spent four years re-creating them to look like a 19th century home.

The Byerlys are selling because they are ready now to redo another house or condominium.

About this home: The condo has sweeping city views and such modern conveniences as an in-unit elevator, a direct elevator from the lobby to a private foyer, and a media room with a 100-inch, rear-screen projection system.

Asking price: $15.9 million

Size: The condo has three bedrooms and five bathrooms in 7,869 square feet. A storage room with hair salon and gift-wrapping area can be converted into an additional bedroom.

Features: There is a two-story living room, a grand salon with an antique fireplace mantle, a mahogany office and a master suite with blackout window shades, a steam shower and a spa.

There are silk draperies, rock crystal chandeliers and European moldings. There is a walnut-paneled family room, a European pub with coffered ceilings and granite bar, a formal dining room with an adjacent sitting room and a sweeping staircase.

The building has a 24-hour concierge, a card room, a kitchen, a gym, a pool and refrigerated wine storage lockers.
