Chechnya will hold a presidential election in October and elect a parliament by year’s end, the head of the Moscow-appointed Chechen administration said. Akhmad Kadyrov said Russian President Vladimir V. Putin would set the date for the presidential ballot, the Itar-Tass news agency said.

In a March vote billed by the Kremlin as part of a political settlement but derided by anti-Moscow forces, voters in Chechnya approved a constitution cementing the region’s status as part of Russia, as well as laws providing for presidential and parliamentary elections. But Moscow’s forces continue to battle rebels who want to break away from Russia.
