Asics Sues Target Over Shoe Design

From Bloomberg News

Target Corp. was sued by Asics Corp. on Friday to stop the retailer from selling shoes that Asics claims bear a stripe design similar to those made by the Japanese sporting goods manufacturer.

Asics, whose U.S. operations are headquartered in Irvine, filed its trademark infringement lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, said Michael Zall, Asics’ vice president and general counsel. The complaint seeks unspecified damages and a court order barring the sale of Target’s ProSpirit shoes.

Target, the second-largest U.S. discount retailer, has been trying to attract customers by introducing trendy lines of clothing and housewares. Asics has filed similar suits against Reebok International Ltd., Nine West Group Inc. and Polo Ralph Lauren Corp.

“Target’s shoes are an attempt to ride on the image and goodwill Asics has developed over the years,” Zall said.

A spokeswoman for Target couldn’t be reached for comment late Friday.
