Police Chief Steps Down in Shooting Controversy
Shreveport’s police chief resigned following two months of criticism over his handling of the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by police officers.
Mayor Keith Hightower, who appointed Jim Roberts to the post in 1999, became incensed this month when Roberts sent an e-mail to white members of the Legislature urging a vote against a proposed citizens board to review police actions.
Black activists and ministers had been pushing for Roberts’ resignation since he said officers acted properly when they shot and killed Marquise Hudspeth.
