The California Transportation Commission cleared the way Thursday for a $148-million carpool lane extension to the Los Angeles International Airport area by agreeing to pay $90 million in construction costs.

The project will add northbound and southbound lanes on the San Diego Freeway from the Santa Monica Freeway interchange to the airport. Raja Mitwasi, chief deputy district director for Caltrans, said it has secured the remaining $58 million for the project and expects to finish the lanes in about three years.
