Duke Makes ACC History

Alana Beard had a game-high 22 points Sunday as No. 2-ranked Duke’s women’s basketball team beat North Carolina State, 86-60, at Durham, N.C., completing a second consecutive undefeated run through the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season.

The Blue Devils (28-1) are the first to go 16-0 in the ACC in consecutive seasons. Virginia, in 1994-95, had the only other women’s team to go unbeaten in conference since the ACC expanded to nine teams before the 1991-92 season.

Kaayla Chones scored 14 points to lead the Wolfpack (11-16, 6-10). The N.C. State men went undefeated in conference in 1972-73 and 1973-74, the only time the feat has been accomplished by men in the ACC.

No. 3 Tennessee 84, Kentucky 69 -- Gwen Jackson scored 25 points as the Lady Vols (26-3, 14-0 Southeastern Conference) overcame 23 turnovers against the Wildcats (11-15, 4-10) at Lexington, Ky.

No. 17 Vanderbilt 72, No. 4 Louisiana State 60 -- Chantelle Anderson scored 24 points at Nashville to lift the Commodores (19-8, 9-5 SEC) over the Tigers (24-3, 11-3).

No. 10 Texas 70, No. 7 Texas Tech 67 -- Jamie Carey scored five of her 17 points in the last 30 seconds for the Longhorns (21-5, 14-1 Big 12) in their victory over the Red Raiders (22-4, 12-3) at Lubbock, Texas.

Virginia 69, No. 8 North Carolina 59 -- LaTonya Blue’s 25 points led the Cavaliers (15-12, 9-7 ACC) over the Tar Heels (25-4, 13-3) at Charlottesville, Va.

No. 11 Mississippi State 65, Auburn 56 -- LaToya Thomas led the Bulldogs (22-6, 10-4 SEC) with 21 points over the host Tigers (17-10, 5-9).

No. 12 Purdue 78, Iowa 68 -- Shereka Wright scored 25 points as the Boilermakers (23-5, 12-4) overcame 19 turnovers at Iowa City, Iowa, to finish tied for second in the Big Ten with Minnesota. Jennie Lillis led Iowa (14-13, 6-10) with 25 points.

No. 13 Minnesota 76, Michigan 63 -- Lindsay Whalen scored 21 points at Ann Arbor, Mich., as the Gophers (23-4, 12-4 Big Ten) matched their school-best finish of a season ago. Michigan (12-15, 3-13) ended up tied with Northwestern for last.

No. 15 Penn State 76, Wisconsin 55 -- Kelly Mazzante scored 35 points at State College, Pa., as the Lions (23-7, 13-3) clinched the Big Ten regular-season title. Wisconsin’s Jane Albright, who announced her resignation Tuesday, coached her last regular-season game for the Badgers (7-20, 5-11).

No. 16 South Carolina 91, Mississippi 68 -- Cristina Ciocan had 23 points at Oxford, Miss., as South Carolina (21-6, 9-5 SEC) pushed Mississippi (12-15, 1-13) to its worst conference record.

No. 21 Arkansas 68, Alabama 57 -- Shameka Christon’s 25 points led the host Razorbacks (20-9, 7-7 SEC) over the Crimson Tide (13-14, 3-11).
