Garrett Likes How Bing Fills No. 20

Mike Garrett was happy to see his No. 20 jersey come out of retirement on Tuesday during the Trojans’ first day of spring practice.

Freshman Darnell Bing got Garrett’s blessing to wear the number when he was recruited, and the 6-foot-2, 216-pound safety impressed USC’s athletic director and the Trojan coaching staff in his first workout since receiving a qualifying score on a college entrance exam.

“I looked over and there’s No. 20, which hasn’t been all sweaty for over 35 years,” Garrett said. “It was kind of nostalgic.”

Bing will also practice at running back.

Offensive coordinator Norm Chow said quarterbacks Matt Cassel, Brandon Hance, Matt Leinart and Billy Hart, “all looked pretty good,” on the first day of competition to succeed Carson Palmer. “I’m going to be real disciplined about not passing judgment until we see them out there for a couple solid weeks of work,” Coach Pete Carroll said.... Freshman Justin Wyatt, who played cornerback last season, is working at wide receiver.... The Trojans are off today, but will practice Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
