Arafat Reportedly Picks Top Aide as Premier

Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat has asked senior aide Mahmoud Abbas to be prime minister, said Ahmed Korei, speaker of the Palestinian parliament.
Although he lacks Arafat’s charisma and high media profile, Abbas commands respect among Palestinian officials, Israel and the U.S. He has often been mentioned as a potential successor to Arafat. Abbas has not decided whether to accept.
