Identity Theft Scam Stopped by EarthLink

Internet portal EarthLink Inc. said it blocked an apparent identity theft scam that sought to collect credit card and bank account numbers.
Many subscribers recently received an e-mail request to resubmit their personal information or face termination of their accounts because of a “recent system flush.”
Users who clicked on a link were directed to a Web site that asked for their name, address, credit card and bank account numbers, as well as personal information such as their mother’s maiden name.
EarthLink shares rose 5 cents to $5.10 on Nasdaq.
