Football Skills Trump Ethics Once Again

I can only imagine how eager Superior Court Judge Thomas R. White will be to follow the budding University of Oregon athletic career of Southern California’s own Rodney Woods, on and off the field [March 1].

The good judge has already provided Mr. Woods with a first-hand lesson in advanced athletic achievement, namely that stellar on-field performance elevates one above laws that are supposed to govern mere mortals off it.

As for the “pure humanistic” Coach Mike Bellotti, one has to wonder why he didn’t work equally hard to spring Woods’ two companions in crime from jail. Then again, there is no evidence in the record of any athletic prowess on the part of those two men.

As tearful parents holding their son’s ashes watch from the stands, misplaced values and athleticism once again defeat moral integrity and accountability on the field of life. Is there no end to this sad game?

I’m afraid that this is another case of a talented athlete getting chances in court that aren’t available to people not so athletically inclined. At least Judge White believes in liberty and justice for some.
