Voters Cast Ballots on Joining European Union
Citizens of Malta voted on whether to join the European Union, the first such referendum among 10 nations invited to join the bloc next year.
Opinion polls before the vote showed the Maltese almost evenly divided on the question.
Hand-counting of ballots cast on the Mediterranean archipelago’s three inhabited islands, where about 280,000 people were eligible to vote, and the complication of ferrying some ballot boxes to the capital, Valletta, meant results were unlikely before this afternoon, officials said.
No exit polls were planned.
