Re “Hands-Free Cell Phone Bill Clears Assembly Committee,” March 4: The implication behind Assemblyman John Benoit’s (R-Palm Desert) comment that “not every phone is a hazard in the hands of every single driver” is the equivalent of saying that alcohol does not adversely affect all drivers, just some of them. A ban on hand-held cell phones is not “an erosion of personal freedom,” as all drivers have a responsibility to everyone else on the road to drive safely.
