Nolan Is Strong in Debut

Todd Bertuzzi took some of the luster off Owen Nolan’s debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Nolan scored twice in his first game for Toronto, but the Maple Leafs tied Vancouver, 3-3, on Saturday night at Toronto, with Bertuzzi scoring two goals and adding an assist.

Nolan, acquired Wednesday from San Jose, gave Toronto a 2-1 lead in the first period and a 3-1 lead early in the third.

Bertuzzi cut Toronto’s lead to 3-2 at 6:04 of the third when he scored his 38th goal of the season off a rebound as he was being checked to the ice. He later assisted on Henrik Sedin’s tying goal.

“Todd’s the reason why we got a point tonight,” Vancouver’s Markus Naslund said.

Nolan, standing in front of the net, tipped Robert Reichel’s shot from the point past goalie Peter Skudra at 18:19 of the first. Fans chanted “Nolan!’ Nolan!” after he redirected Mikael Renberg’s pass, giving Toronto a 3-1 lead at 2:26 of the third.

“It was nice to get that first one. It would have been nice to get a win, but I guess a tie is a point,” Nolan said

Ottawa 5, Pittsburgh 1 -- Magnus Arvedson scored twice at Pittsburhg and the Senators took over the NHL points lead while pushing the Penguins’ losing streak to eight.

Arvedson also set up Daniel Alfredsson’s 24th goal as the Senators won their second in a row -- giving them 92 points, one more than idle Western Conference leader Dallas.

Colorado 2, Philadelphia 1 -- Peter Forsberg scored his second goal of the game 26 seconds into overtime to lead the Avalanche at Philadelphia.

Forsberg poked the puck away from Philadelphia’s Eric Desjardins at the blue line and beat goalie Roman Cechmanek with a backhand shot. Forsberg’s 23rd and 24th goals of the season extended his scoring streak to eight games.

Boston 5, Washington 4 -- Sean O’Donnell scored his first goal of the season halfway through overtime at Boston to lead the Bruins to their third straight win.

Former King Glen Murray had two goals -- giving him 37 for the season -- and two assists for the Bruins.

New Jersey 4, New York Islanders 2 -- Brian Gionta had his first two-goal game in the NHL to lead the Devils at Uniondale, N.Y.

Gionta tied it at 2-2 at 15:35 of the second period and put the Devils ahead with his 10th goal about 12 minutes later.

Calgary 3, Columbus 2 -- Jarome Iginla scored his 30th goal with 7.4 seconds left in overtime to lift the Flames at Columbus, Ohio.

Columbus defenseman Rostislav Klesla had scored his second goal of the season with 1:10 left in regulation to tie it at 2-2.

Phoenix 6, San Jose 4 -- Ladislav Nagy scored two goals and Shane Doan had a goal and three assists at Phoenix to bring the Coyotes back from a 3-0 deficit.

Niko Dimitrakos scored two goals for San Jose.

Buffalo 4, Florida 0 -- Mika Noronen made 29 saves for his first career shutout and first victory of the season to lead the Sabres at Sunrise, Fla.
