Park Officials Plan to Relocate Wild Horses
Wild horses living in Anza Borrego Desert State Park have been captured and will be relocated to sanctuaries in California and South Dakota, authorities said.
A Nevada company experienced in such operations used a helicopter to drive the 29 animals out of the canyons Monday.
The herd of small brown horses has lived in the park since the early 1900s.
Park officials say relocation is in the best interest of the animals and the ecosystem. A UC Davis study found that the horses appeared to be struggling to find food and may have been competing with native wildlife for resources.
