Houston Rocket Coach Rudy Tomjanovich is taking an indefinite leave to treat his bladder cancer.

Tomjanovich, 54, broke the news to his players Wednesday in an emotional team meeting. The Rockets are vying for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

“At this critical part of the season, this team, any team, needs a coach who has got to give 100% of his thoughts to helping the team,” Tomjanovich said. “As much as I love this team, I know my thoughts would be on some other things.”

Tomjanovich missed the team’s recent five-game trip and had been expected to rejoin the team for Wednesday’s home game against the Lakers.

Assistant Larry Smith will continue to coach the Rockets.

When Tomjanovich was asked if he saw any possibility of not returning next season, he said “not in my mind.”

Tomjanovich was diagnosed on March 18 with the transitional cell cancer on his bladder that doctors said would be treatable with medication. Team physician James Muntz said there had been no change in the diagnosis.

Alonzo Mourning intends to play basketball next season, as long as his body cooperates.

“My intentions are to play. The only thing that can stop me is my body,” said Mourning, a Miami Heat center headed for free agency. “Other than that, I know I can play.”

Mourning was forced to sit out this season because of a kidney ailment.

The Indiana Pacers are trying to sign Tim Hardaway in hopes of getting an experienced point guard for the rest of the season. Hardaway, 36 and a five-time All-Star, has not played this season.

“We’ve talked to him,” Pacer President Donnie Walsh said. “If it can be worked out, we’ll do it.”
