Districts Named as Finalists for Award
The Long Beach and Garden Grove school districts have been named as being among the five national finalists for the annual $500,000 Broad Prize for Urban Education.
The award was created last year by businessman and education activist Eli Broad to recognize school systems that are improving test scores and providing quality education to students from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and income levels.
Broad said that finalists “have all set clear achievement goals. They hold students, teachers and schools accountable to reach those benchmarks.”
The other finalists are the Boston, Jefferson County, Ky., and Norfolk, Va., public school districts.
To narrow the field, a review board of 20 educational leaders examined data from more than 100 districts on test scores, dropout rates, advanced-placement classes and demographics.
The winner of the $500,000 award will be announced in September. The other four finalists will receive $125,000 each. The award money funds scholarships for students.
In 2002, the first Broad Prize was given to the Houston Independent School District.
