The Strange World of Gov. Gray Davis

Re “Mr. Unpopular Can Only Persist,” May 12: It makes me feel better that Gray and Sharon Davis can laugh and assure their friends that they are doing OK. Here I was, worried that our governor was having a bad time trying to get our state out of the gigantic debt he accumulated while serving in a time of unprecedented prosperity.

While he and his wife are dining with their billionaire buddies, parents where I live are attending school board meetings trying to deal with budget cuts that are forcing us to fire school aides and teachers, cancel sports programs and get rid of classes that are, by state law, mandatory. Gov. Davis should hang his head in shame. As for his 35 years in politics, maybe he should quit while we’re all behind.
