Let the Democrats Stew

Share

Re “GOP Digs Its Own Grave,” May 22: George Skelton offers Republicans a Faustian bargain: oppose new taxes and become further irrelevant when voters lower the budget approval threshold to 55% or support the Democrats’ tax hikes and lose the Republican base.

A grand experiment is currently playing out, with a conservative federal administration cutting taxes to spur the national economy and a liberal state establishment raising taxes in a slow, near-recessionary state economy.

I say let the state Democrats stew in their own mess. We’ll know soon enough which policy is more effective. Republicans should stand firm and listen to the angels of their better nature.
