Officers and Protesters Clash; Road Reopened
From Times Wire Reports
Troops and police clashed with demonstrators blocking highways over tax and income issues. Security forces managed to reopen Peru’s 1,500-mile Pan American Highway, which had been cut in 64 spots by rocks and smoldering tires, Defense Minister Aurelio Loret de Mola said.
Officials reported 95 arrests, 16 injured officers and seven injured protesters, who were farmers. Other groups protesting are teachers, health workers and judiciary employees.
