7 Empty Freight Cars Derail at L.A. Harbor
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Seven empty freight cars being pushed by a locomotive failed to negotiate a Y in the track Wednesday and derailed at the Los Angeles Harbor complex, blocking access to a busy commercial pier, authorities said.
About 4 p.m., the train approached the Y on Pier 400 “and appeared to go straight through,” said Lt. Mike Kettelkamp of the Los Angeles Port Police.
The cars sprawled across all access lanes on the pier, blocking traffic in both directions, Kettelkamp said.
