Open Qualifying Is Set

PGA Tour pros Duffy Waldorf and David Berganio are among 78 players trying for four spots available in next month’s U.S. Open in a 36-hole sectional qualifier Monday at El Caballero in Tarzana.

Also in the field at El Caballero are John Merrick and Travis Johnson of Pacific 10 Conference champion UCLA, California amateur champion Eddie Heinen of Las Vegas, 2001 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Henry Liaw, 17, of Rowland Heights, four-time Southern California Golf Assn. amateur champion Craig Steinberg and former PGA Tour pro Mac O’Grady.

A total of 724 players will try to qualify at 13 sites on Monday and Tuesday and earn one of the 82 places in the field of 156 that will tee it up in the U.S. Open, June 12-15, at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.

Tom Lehman, who has played in 11 consecutive Opens, will be among the 101 players trying for 20 spots in the qualifier Monday at Columbus, Ohio. Stewart Cink is also there. Matt Kuchar will try to qualify at Roswell, Ga., and Chad Campbell, who fell from the top 10 money winners when he tied for 40th at Colonial, is trying to qualify Monday at Cleveland.

Greg Norman, Bernhard Langer and 83 others will try to qualify Tuesday at Orlando, Fla., where five spots are available. Hal Sutton, Andy Miller, Hank Kuehne and David Gossett will try to win one of the 34 spots at Rockville, Md., where 156 golfers play a qualifier Tuesday.
