Rough Going for Fairway Foe

Fairway Foe, a 9-year-old gelded son of Theatrical, has six victories at Hollywood Park and no other horse running on tonight’s card has more than two wins. But don’t expect him to add to his victory total in the fifth race, an $8,000 claimer at six furlongs.

Fairway Foe is winless in 12 starts and has struggled since being claimed by owner Hugo Catalan and trainer Cirilo Sierra for $10,000 on Feb. 6, 2002.

In 10 starts for Sierra, the Kentucky-bred has hit the board only once. He was third in a field of eight at nearly 57-1 more than a year ago at Hollywood Park. Otherwise, the gelding has finished no better than sixth.

Later in the program, Excess Summer will try to remain unbeaten in his third start when he takes on a streaking Imperial King and four others in the seventh, a $48,000 allowance for Cal breds at seven furlongs.

Owned by a partnership and trained by Jeff Mullins, Excess Summer -- a 3-year-old In Excess gelding -- broke his maiden for trainer Mike Machowsky at Santa Anita, then after being claimed for $40,000, won a starter allowance by 2 1/2 lengths on May 17.

Race of the day: T S Eliot, a 3-year-old son of Storm Cat, will make his debut for Darley Stud Management and trainer Eoin Harty in tonight’s sixth at Bay Meadows. The chestnut has 1:12 3/5 and 58 4/5 workouts at Santa Anita with the latter drill out of the gate.

One for the road: Danaleta, who couldn’t handle the dirt when making her U.S. debut on March 15 at Gulfstream Park, could rebound on turf for trainer Christophe Clement in today’s eighth, a $48,000 allowance at one mile, at Belmont Park.

Exotically speaking: A pick four singling Smokindowntheroad in the fifth, using Skywalker Red, Blairs General and Cornicopia in the sixth, Excess Summer and Imperial King in the seventh and Secret Tales, Go Tiff Go and Missdavilynn in the eighth.
