Penguins Get Hit by Lightning, 9-0

Vincent Lecavalier scored three goals and Nikolai Khabibulin had to make only 15 saves for his 33rd career shutout to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 9-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday night at Tampa, Fla.

The nine goals are the most ever by the Lightning. Pittsburgh’s most lopsided loss was 12-0 to Montreal on Feb. 22, 1979.

Lecavalier scored two second-period goals and completed his third career hat trick with 14:29 left in the third.

Pittsburgh center Mario Lemieux sat out his third straight game because of a strained muscle in his left hip. The Penguins have lost all three.

New Jersey 1, Ottawa 0 -- Scott Stevens scored early in the third period at Ottawa and Martin Brodeur made 26 saves for his 66th career shutout in the teams’ first meeting since the Devils eliminated the Senators in seven games in the Eastern Conference finals last season.

Stevens, who sat out Friday night’s game against Toronto to attend a funeral, scored at 6:34 of the third period.

Montreal 3, Buffalo 0 -- Jose Theodore got his NHL-leading fourth shutout and assisted on Chad Kilger’s goal at Montreal.

Theodore, who has allowed only two goals in his six wins this season, made 16 saves to help the Canadiens end a three-game losing streak.

Jan Bulis and Sheldon Souray also scored for the Canadiens, outscored 24-7 while losing six of seven.

San Jose 3, Washington 2 -- The Sharks, who broke a three-game winless streak, have beaten the Capitals eight consecutive times. San Jose had only one win in its last 10 games (1-5-5-1). Jonathan Cheechoo’s goal broke a second-period tie for the Sharks in the final game of a seven-game trip.

St. Louis 2, Florida 0 -- Keith Tkachuk scored both goals, and Chris Osgood made 21 saves at St. Louis for his 39th career shutout. Tkachuk has scored the game-winner in three straight games for the Blues, who have won five of their last six.

Florida fell to 0-5-0-0 against Western Conference opponents. The Panthers are 1-7-1-0 in their last nine games in St. Louis.

Philadelphia 2, New York Rangers 1 -- Tony Amonte scored the tying goal 49 seconds into the third period, and then fed Marcus Ragnarsson for the game-winner 1:01 into overtime at Madison Square Garden.

Nashville 4, Detroit 3 -- Scott Walker’s power-play goal with 57 seconds left at Detroit capped a four-goal third period for the Predators, who trailed, 3-0, going into the third period.

Boston 4, Dallas 1 -- Sergei Samsonov, Glen Murray, Michal Grosek and Travis Green scored for the Bruins, who were 0-1-2-1 in their first four games at home.

The Bruins, who have an Eastern Conference-leading 20 points in 14 games, beat the Stars for only the second time in 11 games.

Toronto 4, Edmonton 1 -- At Toronto, Alexander Mogilny had two goals and an assist, and Ed Belfour made 34 saves for the Maple Leafs, 3-0-1 in their last four games. Belfour’s 406 wins are sixth on the NHL career list, one behind Glenn Hall.

Atlanta 4, New York Islanders 3 -- Serge Aubin scored the tiebreaking goal with 8:32 left at Uniondale, N.Y. The Thrashers, now 4-3-3-1 in games they trailed 1-0, are off to their best start (7-4-3-1).

Vancouver 4, Minnesota 3 -- Todd Bertuzzi scored twice and Jason King, the NHL’s leading scorer among rookies, scored his eighth goal for the Canucks, who have won six of seven and are 7-0-1 in eight home games.

Marian Gaborik of the Wild scored his first goal since ending a contract holdout last week.
