SUV Plows Into Gettysburg Monument
A sport utility vehicle veered into Gettysburg National Military Park, overturned and slammed into a 115-year-old Civil War monument, officials said. The granite sculpture broke into three pieces.
The driver, Laura M. Staub, said she did not know what caused her to lose control of the SUV on Wednesday night. She wasn’t seriously hurt.
The vehicle hit the 74th Pennsylvania Infantry Monument, which was dedicated in 1888, a park spokeswoman said. The life-sized sculpture depicts a color bearer holding a regimental flag.
The cost of repairs was estimated at $15,000 to $20,000, officials said. Staub was fined $25 for failing to maintain control of a vehicle.
