City Considers Razing Aging Waterfront Hotel

From Times Wire Reports

A local landmark may be torn down so the city can realize a decades-old dream of creating an upscale hotel and conference center on the waterfront.

City officials and Santa Cruz Coast Hotel owners are looking at the possibility of replacing the aging, 10-story Coast Hotel on West Cliff Drive with a 225- to 275-room hotel with conference and banquet rooms, restaurants and other guest amenities. The Coast Hotel may be more familiar to some as the Dream Inn.

“Our goal since the [1989 Loma Prieta] earthquake has been a hotel and conference center in the beach area,” said Councilman Scott Kennedy. “And now, we could have a place to do it.”
