Port Hueneme has become the first city in Ventura County to approve a living-wage ordinance.

The City Council voted 3 to 1 Wednesday to approve the action, which mandates that employees of certain city contractors be paid at least $9 an hour if health-care benefits are offered, or $11.50 an hour if the benefits are not offered.

Mayor Jon Sharkey and council members Murray Rosenbluth and Maricela Morales voted for the measure, while Councilman Anthony Volante voted against it. Mayor Pro Tem Toni Young, who had voted against the amendment at its first reading two weeks ago, was absent.
