From Staff and Wire Reports

The Angels are close to naming a successor to recently fired scouting director Donny Rowland, and several sources said Thursday that Eddie Bane, who spent 11 years as a national cross checker and major league scout with the Dodgers, might have emerged as the leading candidate.

The sources cautioned that General Manager Bill Stoneman had interviewed several candidates and had not made a final decision.

Bane currently works for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as special assistant to General Manager Chuck LaMar.

He lives in Carlsbad and is a longtime acquaintance of Gary Sutherland, who is Stoneman’s special assistant. Bane and Sutherland worked for the Dodgers at the same time.

Eddie Murray was the first to be interviewed for the Baltimore Orioles’ managerial post, which became open with the dismissal of Mike Hargrove.

The list of candidates includes Oriole coaches Rick Dempsey and Sam Perlozzo.

Details of the Pete Rose gambling investigation will be available to the public -- but not for several years.

John Dowd, the lawyer who headed the probe, has donated boxes of materials on Rose to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

“It is some neat stuff,” said Jim Gates, library director of the Hall of Fame. “We’re looking at several years before they are properly indexed, put in proper boxes and files and made available to researchers.”
