Riot Leads to 45 Arrests

Police arrested dozens of students during an alcohol-fueled riot in the streets of Mankato, Minn., early Sunday after Mankato State lost its homecoming game to North Dakota State, 20-9.

As many as 3,000 people were in a crowd that gathered in a student residential area, some setting fire to trash bins, tearing down fences, smashing car windows and throwing rocks and bricks at officers, police said.

Police in riot gear used eye and skin irritants to disperse the crowd and arrested 45 people. Four officers were injured by objects thrown at them, said Jim Franklin, the city’s public safety director.

The area became so dangerous that it took an armored vehicle to pick up a student who reportedly wasn’t breathing, Franklin said. Police also received reports of students being assaulted by fellow students. About a dozen people were treated for injuries at a hospital.

The top six teams remained the same in the latest Associated Press poll.

Oklahoma remained No. 1, receiving 59 of the possible 65 first-place votes, and Miami was No. 2. USC was No. 9.

The Big Ten leads all conferences with seven teams in the poll.

Oklahoma linebacker Pasha Jackson will miss at least two weeks after injuring his right knee in the Sooners’ victory at Iowa State, Coach Bob Stoops said.

Jackson, a senior, suffered what officials think is a sprained medial collateral ligament.

Linebacker Lawrence Pinson, Oklahoma State’s leading tackler, probably will miss the rest of the season after injuring his right leg in the Cowboys’ victory over Louisiana Lafayette.

He joins Elbert Craig, a starting safety whose season appears over after he suffered a knee injury last week during practice.
