Deadly tide in Ventura Harbor

One of the worst fish kills in Ventura Harbor’s history, brought on by a severe red tide, may be nearing an end. Oscar Pena, the port district’s general manager, says the worst may be over.

Workers scooped up about 80 tons of fish killed in the 10-day siege of red tide. Pena said that the oxygen level in the harbor’s water remained low and that fish were still jumping out of the water, a sign they were suffocating.

“We hope the worst is over,” he said. “It could take up to a year to have fish at previous levels.”
