Paul Meecham, general manager of the New York Philharmonic, has been chosen to succeed Deborah Card as executive director of the Seattle Symphony, causing some discord among musicians.

Patricia Isacson Sabee has been interim director since Card left last summer to take the top administrative post at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Some orchestra members told the Seattle Times that they were concerned that Meecham, a native of Britain who ran the London Sinfonietta from 1991 to 1997, had never been in charge of a U.S. orchestra.

He was general manager of the San Francisco Symphony for 18 months before taking the same post at the New York Philharmonic in 1999.
