On a visit to Afghanistan, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien said his country does not plan to send more troops to boost the peacekeeping force that is gearing up to expand beyond the capital, Kabul.

Canada has provided 2,000 of the 5,000 troops in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, making it the largest contributor.

Last week, the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to allow the coalition forces to fan out to key cities in some of Afghanistan’s most lawless provinces.
