Great actor’s beach abode
This is called “the Barrymore House,” not for Drew, the 28-year-old actress who made her mark in such films as “E.T.” and “Charlie’s Angels,” but for her grandfather, John, the stage and screen star who died in 1942.
The Pacific Palisades house, built in 1928, was the actor’s summer home during the early ‘30s. He liked to party there, and he used it as a romantic hideaway.
Before that, it was owned by Cedric Gibbons, an art director at MGM who is credited with designing the Oscar statuette, which he won 11 times.
About this house: For the last couple of years, the home has been owned by Carol and Jeff Ester.
They gutted the house and, after restoring much of it, added such updated items as stainless steel dishwashers, and security and built-in vacuum systems. They also added such antique touches as polished nickel bathroom fixtures, stained-glass doors, Malibu tiles and silver-plated light sconces.
Asking price: $4.5 million
Size: The house has four bedrooms and 3 1/2 bathrooms in about 5,000 square feet.
Features: There are ocean views from every room, including the bathrooms. The classic California Spanish-style home is a few steps from the beach via pedestrian bridge.
Where: It is in the Castellammare area of the Palisades, just below the original Getty Museum.
