U.S. homeownership rose to a record in the third quarter as more Americans were able to buy homes because of a 45-year low in mortgage rates, the Department of Commerce said.

The share of households that own their home increased to 68.4%, accounting for 72.2 million homes. The proportion had been 68% in the first and second quarters. The record had been 68.3% in the fourth quarter of 2002.
