Following the Money That Pays for Socialism

“Renters Find More Room in S.F.” (Sept. 1) exposes the absurdity of socialism. Toni Thompson, a jobless 22-year-old with a 5-year-old son, lives in a two-bedroom house for almost nothing. In our house, four older women with actual income have to share one kitchen and 2 1/2 baths so that we can pay federal taxes to support Thompson’s relatively luxurious housing. We plan to vote Republican (again) regardless of the war, regardless of abortion, regardless of the idiotic Christian right.

Thompson’s rent is subsidized under Section 8, and her responsibility is only $50 per month. Why should we subsidize so much rent to have families live way beyond their means? I would love to have an oceanfront beach home but cannot afford to buy or rent. Will Section 8 subsidize $7,000 of the $8,000 monthly rent that I need?

What other aid does this family receive? Many families receive multiple forms of aid, including food stamps, child care and welfare, to mention a few. It is getting to the point where subsidized families live better than hard-working, self-sufficient taxpaying families.
