Edison Customers Set Consumption Record

Southern California Edison customers set an electricity consumption record, which the utility blamed on heavy air conditioner use.

Demand for electricity in Edison’s 50,000-square-mile territory hit 20,136 megawatts at 4 p.m., according to the Rosemead utility, a subsidiary of Edison International. Average temperature, weighted for population patterns, peaked at about 102 degrees, an Edison spokesman said.

The previous Edison record of 19,935 megawatts was set Aug. 31, 1998, when the weighted average temperature was 109.7 degrees.
