Gagne Is Their Security Blanket

The Dodgers continue to marvel at the performance of Eric Gagne, who has reached 100 saves faster than any closer in major league history.

The right-hander reached the milestone in his 104th save opportunity Friday night while nailing down an 8-7 victory over Colorado. He got a day off Saturday as the Dodgers cruised in a 10-2 blowout.

Gagne inspires confidence with each dominant outing in his record-setting season, helping the Dodgers believe they can earn the National League wild-card berth.

“He really has been amazing to watch, and seeing him out there definitely gives everyone a lot of confidence,” center fielder Dave Roberts said. “Most of the time, we don’t even need our gloves, which is a great feeling.”

The sight of Gagne on the mound has been uplifting for the Dodgers, who have had many down moments this season.

“He has a tremendous presence,” right fielder Shawn Green said. “We’re just as excited as the fans when he comes in. As his teammates, we feel the same way, because you know you’re watching something special.

“He’s the light at the end of the tunnel each game. When we have a lead, even in the middle of the game, we know there’s Gagne waiting there at the end.”

In campaigning for Gagne to receive strong MVP consideration, Manager Jim Tracy has stressed the reliever’s positive impact on the Dodger psyche.

Said catcher Paul Lo Duca: “It’s to the point where you expect to win when you have the lead. “He’s durable, he can go five, six days in a row, and that’s huge for us.”

Ron Coomer had his first multi-homer game since April 2000.

Tracy started Coomer at first base because the veteran infielder had 11 hits -- including two home runs -- in 31 at-bats against Colorado starter Darren Oliver. Coomer hit a solo homer in the fourth against Oliver and a two-run shot in the seventh off Jesus Sanchez.

Coomer, sidelined by a jaw problem in July, has played in only 59 games. But he’s always eager and ready.

“Are there days where it’s harder than others? Yeah,” Coomer said of his limited role. “If it’s not, then something’s actually wrong with you.... I want to play just like everybody else, but I understand what my role is.”

Roberts was unavailable for the second straight game because of neck stiffness.... Hideo Nomo, recently diagnosed with inflammation on his rotator cuff, is scheduled to have a bullpen session today.
