Two bills to prevent cruise ships from discharging waste into state coastal waters were approved Monday by the state Senate.

One measure, by Assemblyman Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto), would cover the release of sewage sludge and oily bilge water. Another bill, by Assemblyman George Nakano (D-Torrance), focuses on waste from ship photo labs, medical waste and dry-cleaning waste.

Both bills were returned to the Assembly for votes on Senate amendments, which stripped an outright ban on the discharge of sewage and gray water -- the effluent from showers, sinks and galleys.
