Slip in Bryant Case

The cloak of secrecy surrounding the identifying characteristics of Kobe Bryant’s accuser was inadvertently lifted Tuesday when her name and address were included in a court filing posted on a state Web site.

The personal information was available for more than an hour before a court employee removed the filing from the site and reposted it with the name and address blacked out.

State courts spokeswoman Karen Salaz said it was unclear how the error was made. Eagle County court staffers are responsible for ensuring such information is blacked out in public filings.

The filing was made by the Vail Police Department and requested that Eagle County Judge Frederick Gannett quash a subpoena served by Bryant’s attorneys seeking recordings of two 911 calls made from the home of the accuser.

Bryant is charged with sexually assaulting the 19-year-old Eagle woman June 30. The Laker guard says the sex was consensual, and he is free on $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 9.

The 911 records already have been placed under seal in response to a request by the Vail Daily newspaper to release them. Attorney Matthew Mire, representing the Vail Police Department, said releasing the records to Bryant’s attorneys would violate that order.
