Tigers’ Maroth Joins a Very Select Club

The Detroit Tigers lost their 114th game, the fifth-highest total in major league history, falling to the Toronto Blue Jays, 10-6, Thursday night at Detroit as Mike Maroth became the first pitcher in 29 years to lose 21 games.

Maroth (7-21), who yielded seven runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings, is the first 21-game loser since 1974, when Mickey Lolich lost 21, and Bill Bonham, Randy Jones and Steve Rogers lost 22.

Boston 4, Tampa Bay 3 -- At Fenway Park, the Red Sox increased their lead in the wild-card race to 2 1/2 games over Seattle. They are five games behind the New York Yankees in the East Division with 10 games left.

Texas 2, Seattle 1 -- The Mariners’ playoff hopes took another blow when rookie Laynce Nix blooped an RBI single in the 10th inning at Arlington, Texas. The Mariners lost three of four to the last-place team in the West Division.

Kansas City 3, Cleveland 2 -- Jose Lima (8-1) returned from the disabled list to pitch five solid innings at Cleveland to help the Royals stay 4 1/2 games behind Central Division leader Minnesota.

New York 1, Baltimore 1 -- A steady rain caused the game at Baltimore to be stopped after five innings. The individual statistics will count.
