Major League Baseball asked players Thursday to shift 22 of the Montreal Expos’ home games next season from Montreal to San Juan, Puerto Rico, or Monterrey, Mexico.

Baseball officials spent much of the last eight months discussing a permanent move of the Expos to Northern Virginia, Portland, Ore., or Washington, D.C.

Despite baseball’s intention to decide by the end of the regular season, it appears no long-term solution will be made for the 2004 season.

Rob Manfred, baseball’s executive vice president for labor relations, made the proposal during a meeting in New York with Gene Orza of the Players’ Assn. It has not been decided whether to move the games to Puerto Rico or Mexico.

The fan attending Wednesday night’s San Francisco Giants’ game against San Diego who fell to his death from the elevated right-field wall at Pacific Bell Park was identified as Todd Adams, 35, of Santa Cruz. He attempted to climb down the outside of the wall to retrieve something he dropped onto the walkway 24 feet below during the eighth inning.
