No Charges in Sunbather Death
A police officer who ran over a sunbather on the beach while chasing two mugging suspects will not be charged in her death, prosecutors said Monday.
Officer George Varon drove over French sisters Stephanie and Sandrine Tunc on Feb. 22, killing 27-year-old Stephanie and injuring her 26-year-old sister.
Varon was not using a siren but was driving 5 to 6.5 mph in his marked Ford Explorer, showing he did not act recklessly, the Miami-Dade County state attorney’s office said.
Varon was pursuing two suspects who were thought to be involved in a mugging, which police later learned was a domestic dispute.
The accident led Miami Beach to impose tougher policies for emergency vehicles driving on the beach.
The Tunc family is suing the city for unspecified damages.
