City to Lay Off 213, Close Libraries, Rec Centers

The city will lay off 213 workers, shutter its branch libraries and close half its recreational centers as a result of $9.2 million in budget cuts approved by the City Council this week.
Hamstrung by a projected $35-million shortfall for the coming fiscal year, city officials expect to make 200 more layoffs unless they can negotiate concessions worth another $9.2 million from the city’s unions.
