Apartment House Brings Back Memories

Re “Apartments Deemed Worth Saving,” April 1: The controversy over the fate of Lincoln Place Apartments brought back some memories because my wife and I rented there in its early life. We pulled off Lincoln Boulevard one sunny April day in 1951 to see a happy sight -- new rentals available! New to Los Angeles, we had been through some dreary old real estate, and this was heaven. Construction was continuing, but people were moving in as soon as buildings were finished.

Mr. Bialac himself [Gerald’s father, who owned the site] welcomed us and gave us an enthusiastic tour. We signed and moved in at, I believe, $65 a month. We stayed over a year and met some long-lasting friends and had a lot of fun. Finally, though, a riveter who worked nights at Douglas moved in below us, and his breakfast at midnight was too much; we moved to Playa del Rey. Now that’s an even better story.
