City Opens New Park Near Padres’ Outfield

From Times Wire Reports

Though smaller than initially promised by the San Diego Padres, a grassy area known as the “Park at the Park” is ready for baseball fans who wish to enjoy games from a lawn just beyond the outfield.

Mayor Dick Murphy and city officials inaugurated the park on Monday, just in time for the Padres’ home season opener on Thursday.

The 2.7-acre park is smaller than the four-acre site envisioned in early plans for the new downtown ballpark. When the Padres unveiled a plan last year showing the park would be less than two acres, critics urged the City Council to act and the team eventually agreed to enlarge it.
