Government Troops Retake Regional Capital
Afghan army troops have retaken the northern provincial capital of Maymana a day after it was overrun by fighters loyal to warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum, presidential spokesman Jawed Ludin said. But the ousted governor remained in hiding and said he feared for his life. It was not immediately clear whether Dostum’s men had withdrawn from the city.
Accounts of the clash varied, but no casualties were reported on either side. In a phone call to President Hamid Karzai, Dostum expressed loyalty to the central government, Ludin said.
