A man who fled from a traffic stop near the Century Freeway fired an AK-47 assault rifle at sheriff’s deputies Friday and ran, authorities said.

Deputies had stopped the man at 3:21 p.m. near New Hampshire Avenue and 117th Street, just west of Vermont Avenue in the Athens area.

“They walked up to the car, saw the weapon, and the suspect took off,” said Deputy Rich Pena.

The suspect drove a few blocks, then got out of his car and fired the rifle at deputies, who fired back.

No one was hit.

The man then dropped his rifle on the driveway of a home in the 11800 block of New Hampshire and ran into a garage, Pena said. Deputies evacuated nearby houses.

Late Friday night, the man was still believed to be inside the house, surrounded by deputies. Authorities did not know if it was the suspect’s residence.
